The red-vested Senegal: same gentle nature, bolder look.
🔥 Orange-Red Vest
📊 Least Concern
Every Senegal parrot wears a vest, but this subspecies wears the loudest one. A grey head and green wings frame a deep orange to red chest that catches the eye across a room. Otherwise, the bird behaves exactly like any other Senegal: curious, loyal, and surprisingly quiet for a parrot.

If you prefer the classic yellow look, our Poicephalus Senegal Parrot page covers the nominate subspecies.
Range and Habitat
This subspecies lives in the southern stretch of the Senegal parrot’s range. Wild birds occur from northwestern Ivory Coast across Ghana to southwestern Nigeria, where they favor open woodland and savanna edges. Because their range sits closer to the coast, they meet wetter, greener country than their yellow-vested relatives to the northwest.
Taxonomists have argued over a third form, called mesotypus, which carries a deep orange chest and paler plumage. Major authorities like the IOC don’t recognize it as separate, so they fold those birds into the nominate subspecies. As a result, you may see sellers use the terms “orange-bellied” and “red-bellied” loosely.
Temperament
Versteri Senegals are lively, gregarious, and rarely sit still. They attach strongly to their favorite person, yet they can act shy around strangers. Occasional mood swings and sudden nips do happen, so daily handling matters. For that reason, a hand-reared, captive-bred bird makes the smoothest companion.
Diet and Daily Care
Wild Senegals eat mostly fruit, along with seeds, nuts, and blossoms. Mirror that at home with a quality pellet base and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. In addition, give a strong cage and safe chew toys, since these parrots love to gnaw. With good care, they often live 25 to 30 years or longer.
Buyer Questions
How does a Versteri differ from a regular Senegal parrot?

Is a Versteri Senegal noisy?
Not compared with most parrots. They stay lively and chatty, yet they rarely reach the volume of larger species.
Can Versteri Senegals learn to talk?
Yes. They mimic words and sounds well, particularly when hand-reared and spoken to daily.
Where do Versteri Senegals come from?
They come from West Africa, ranging from northwestern Ivory Coast through Ghana to southwestern Nigeria.
What should I feed one?
Offer a quality pellet base with fresh fruit and vegetables daily, plus a few nuts as treats.
How long do they live?
Most live 25 to 30 years, and some reach much older with excellent care.
Are they good for first-time parrot owners?
They can be, provided you commit to daily handling. Their size and quieter voice help, though mood swings still call for patience.
